PREMIERE: Sam Buckingham Covers ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’ Acoustic, Nails It

Stuff We Like #764 – acoustic covers of pop songs – and Aussie singer-songwriter Sam Buckingham is taking that one step further, with her acoustic cover of the theme song to Will Smith‘s ’90s staple, Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, which really needs to be heard to be believed.

Buckingham, who dropped her latest full-length album I’m A Bird back in July, ain’t scared of showing that a purveyor of sweet pop musings can also have quite the sense of humour. She’s also a pioneer of the House Concert Tours model in Australia, having played in the homes of almost 100 fans now, which is apparently a growing trend in the US and Europe. Whatta woman.

If you’re enjoying Buckingham’s indie stylings, you can pick this track up on iTunes, and you’ve also got a chance to catch her live at the tail-end of her current Aussie tour, with dates in Adelaide and Dee Why happening next week. The songstress will be performing I’m A Bird from start to finish, and hopefully dropping her Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air cover in too.

Alternatively, if you can’t make it to Adelaide or Dee Why, you can check out Sam’s recent live-streamed performance from Music Feeds Studio over on our YouTube channel.

You can check out Sam describing how the cover came about below the vid.

“We shot this at The Brisbane Powerhouse on 11th August after my show there for the tour. I’ve been bringing out the cover now and then since February, after heading to Toronto for the International Folk Alliance.

“I was one of about 5 Aussie artists showcasing at this big folk music conference and the way it works is , people rent out rooms in this massive hotel to showcase their stuff. They invite other artists to come play as well and there’s a different gig in each hotel room over 3 floors for five nights or something. It’s quite mental.

“So these guys from a band called Gangstagrass emailed me and said ‘hey we love your stuff, do you want to come showcase in our room one night?’ these guys are brilliant – hip hop and bluegrass all mixed together – so I said yes straight away and they emailed back saying ‘great…The only rule is, you have to play us your favourite hip hop song,’ and this is the song I played

“I watched the show religiously as a kid after school and always sang along to the rap with my sisters. I still love watching clips on YouTube today… Will Smith is quite brilliant.”
