Questlove Says We Need To Stop Deciding What Prince Would Approve Of When It Comes To Tributes

The Roots’ Questlove has taken to Twitter to say we need to stop deciding what Prince would and wouldn’t approve of when it comes to tributes following Madonna and Stevie Wonder’s tribute at the Billboard Music Awards.

As Billboard reports, Questlove was asked by Madonna herself to give a spoken tribute to Prince before her performance at the awards and he obliged calling Prince’s departure from the music world “an earthquake”.

Amid plenty of opinions about Madonna’s performance of Nothing Compares 2 U and Purple Rain, Questlove sent out a series of tweets centred around the idea that “EVERYBODY wants and deserves a chance to say goodbye,” to Prince.

“Let’s not get ugly w playing the “Prince would and wouldn’t approve” game,” he tweeted, not defending Madonna’s tribute in so many words but defending everyone’s right to pay tribute to the performer.

“Every Prince rendition will not be a life changing orgasmic xperience,” he wrote.

“Just to SING his work is brave enough.”

He further replied to a tweet of someone who wrote they expected more from the Billboard tribute saying, “Not knocking BB, but that ain’t no Grammys now.”

Questlove had to end his Twitter stream of consciousness because he was running through the airport and was about to miss his plane.

“Don’t wanna get fired in the name of Prince,” he tweeted.

Needless to say, Questlove is a huge fan of Prince and lit up the internet recently with a story about when he DJ’d at a Prince party and was asked by The Purple One to put Finding Nemo on instead. Questlove honoured Prince after his death by playing Finding Nemo at a tribute gig.
