Is RiFF RaFF a rap-game ring-in? After Kendrick Lamar called out pretty much every high-profile rapper on Big Sean‘s new track Control (HOF), the hip hop world has been a little on-edge, and now RiFF RaFF has responded to Lamar’s diss-laden verse, publishing new track Ballin’ Outta Control (The Neon Response), despite never having been directly dissed by Lamar in any way.
In Lamar’s verse, the self-anointed “King of New York” disses some of the highest profile modern rappers, including Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Jay Electronica, Tyler, The Creator, Mac Miller and even Big Sean himself:
“I’m usually homeboys with the same n****s I’m rhyming wit’
But this is hip-hop and them n****s should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you n****s
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n****s
They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you n****s”
Riff Raff’s response, which you can listen to below, has been touted by the man himself as “A NEON RESPONSE TO THE WORLD TO LET EVERYONE KNOW WHO HAS THE BEST VOCABULARY & iMAGiNATiON iN THE RAP GAME,” he said via Twitter.
But now, Pitchfork have spotted that in typical CAPS LOCK fashion, Riff Raff has admitted that Ballin’ Outta Control is not a reaction or response to Lamar’s verse; Riff Raff pseudo-trolled us all. “i GOT A VERSACE CONFESSiON TO MAKE : i MADE THAT BALLiN OUTTA CONTROL TRACK LiKE 3 WEEKS AGO iN CANADA iT AiNT NO RESPONSE TO NOTHiNG,” he announced on Twitter, his caps key still very much stuck in its place.
So was this all an opportunistic joke? Or a sly and somewhat naive attempt to provoke Kendrick Lamar into dissing RiFF RaFF so that he felt like part of the gang? One thing’s for sure: everyone wants a piece of the action. The controversy has now got it’s own Hitler meme video to cement its place in Internet outrage history.
