Sia, Chet Faker Win Big At The ARIAs

The 2014 ARIA Awards have come and gone at The Star in Sydney, and this year’s awards have been dominated by Adelaide-born, international hit-maker Sia Furler and Melbourne muso Chet Faker who walked out with multiple awards.

The biggest award of the night, Album Of The Year, went to Sia for this year’s chart-topping album 1000 Forms Of Fear. Sia actually began her dominance of the 2014 awards when she and Daniel Askill took out the prize for Best Video for Chandelier, while she also won Best Pop Release and took the award for Best Female Artist.

As per her current trend, she was not there in the flesh to accept the awards, but homage was paid to the flesh-coloured leotard made famous in the Chandelier clip thanks to triple j hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson.

Award show golden boy Chet Faker was named the year’s Best Male artist over big name acts like Guy Sebastian and Vance Joy, and also took the award for Best Independent Release for his album Built On Glass, beating out stiff competition from the likes of Joy, Dan Sultan, Sheppard and Violent Soho.

In the night’s other big moments, Molly Meldrum this year became the the first non-recording artist to enter ARIA’s Hall of Fame, accepting the gong with a teary and heartfelt speech. Faker, in suit and beanie, brought the Star to its knees with a stirring performance, while Sheppard and Melbourne Ska Orchestra teamed up for a spirited version of the former’s massively successful hit Geronimo.

DZ Deathrays beat out acts like Shihad, Sleepmakeswaves and The Amity Affliction when they took out the award for Best Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Album for their release Black Rat. “I have zero expectations, that’s my life motto,” vocalist Shane Parsons told Music Feeds on the red carpet before the ceremony. “It’s flattering to be nominated, up against some big competition.”

Sydney pop-punk four-piece 5 Seconds Of Summer scored their only award of the evening when their hit track She Looks So Perfect won Song Of The Year, while the award for Breakthrough Artist went to US chart topper Iggy Azalea.

John Butler Trio won Best Blues And Roots album, Best Country Album went to Kasey Chambers, Hilltop Hoods won Best Urban Album and celebrated with an ARIA stage performance while the Best Rock Album award went to blues rocker Dan Sultan.

Check out the entire list of nominees and winners below as well as interviews with artists direct from the ARIA red carpet.

UPDATE 27/11/14: Sia has given away her four ARIA Awards, after expressing her unhappiness at being labelled a “no-show” at last night’s ceremony. Details here.
