Silverchair Drummer Ben Gillies Charged With Drink-Driving & Refusing Breath Test

UPDATE: Silverchair’s Ben Gillies Avoids Jail Time Over Drink Driving Charge

ORIGINAL STORY: Former Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies has been charged with drink-driving and refusing a breath test.

38-year-old Gillies was charged with mid-range drink-driving on 21st January, and the matter was mentioned in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, Fairfax Media reports.

Court documents reportedly state that Gillies was driving on Maitland Road in Islington just before 1am when he was pulled over by police, who allege he blew a blood alcohol level of 0.144 and failed to submit a breath test.

Gillies was charged with mid-range drink driving, refusing or failing to submit to a breath test and negligent driving. The matter has now been adjourned until 1st March.

Gillies’ former bandmate Daniel Johns was convicted of drink-driving in 2014. He was fined $880 and was disqualified from driving at the time.

Last year, Gillies revealed that he may never tour again, after sustaining a serious shoulder injury at a Melbourne gym.
