Justin Bieber & Skrillex Respond To Claims They Ripped Off ‘Sorry’

Justin Bieber and Skrillex are not Sorry.

After being hit with a copyright lawsuit from American singer-songwriter Casey Diene aka White Hinterland – who claims their intergalactic mega-hit Sorry flogged a sample from her original track Ring The Bell – the pair have responded with a resounding #SozNotSoz.

Publically addressing the lawsuit via Twitter, Skrill shot back: “SORRY but we didn’t steal this”, alongside a video of the acapella vocal take from the original Sorry writing session. The dublord then went on to show how his crew manipulated the vox to achieve the final result that we hear blasting out of supermarket PA’s and car radio speakers every goddam day.

Unsurprisingly, it’s auto-tuned to the fuck but otherwise seems legit.

And in a show of support, the Biebs has since embedded Skrillex’s tweet alongside his own hashtag #wedontsteal.

Diene originally claimed that Sorry mimicked the “unique characteristics of the female vocal riff” from her 2014 song Ring the Bell and if you have a listen it does sound pretty freakin’ similar.

She’s suing Skrillex and Bieber – as well as their Sorry co-writers Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, and Michael Tucker – for cash, as well as trying to get Bieber to stop playing the song full stop (and best of luck with that).

“Justin Bieber is the world’s biggest artist, and I’m sure that he and his team will launch a full attack against me,” she said in a Facebook post. “But, in the end, I was left with no other option. I believe I have an obligation to stand up for my music and art.”

She’s also outlined her annoyance at how simple it would have been for His Royal Biebness to get permission to use the vocal line in the first place.

“Bieber could have licensed my song for use in Sorry. But he chose not to contact me,” she said.

Fellow Skrill/Biebs collaborator Diplo has also weighed in on the brouhaha, saying: “I’m sure they’ll work out a deal with her. They don’t want to go to court with it”.
