Slayer Unleash ‘Implode’, First Rubin-less Track In 28 Years

Thrash metal vanguards Slayer have released Implode, the band’s first new studio recording in five years and their first without longtime collaborator Rick Rubin in 28 years. The track, which is available for free download, comes on the wind of their signing to Nuclear Blast Records.

During last night’s Revolver Golden Gods Awards at the Nokia Theatre in LA, the capacity crowd was treated to an unannounced three-song Slayer performance, which kicked off with the global premiere of Implode, which the band is calling a “thank-you” to their fans for their ongoing support.

The track comes as a relief to many fans, after frontman Tom Araya fuelled speculation that the band could be calling it quits. Despite optimistic comments from guitarist Kerry King, Araya said the band’s future was uncertain in the wake of “irreplaceable” guitarist Jeff Hanneman‘s death.

Araya now speaks now more positively, honouring the “huge” role of Rubin in the band’s output — helming their output from 1986 to 2009 — and saying, “Today is a new day, record companies don’t play the kind of role they once did, and we really like the idea of going out on our own, connecting directly with our fans, and Nuclear Blast is fired up about taking on that challenge with us.”
