Slipknot were said to be starting work on new material in February, and now percussionist Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan has confirmed that the band are back at it, and have already written some “amazing” new songs for their next full-length effort.
As Blabbermouth points out, Clown recently chatted with Detroit radio station WRIF, and confirmed that the songwriting process has begun for the follow-up to 2014’s .5: The Gray Chapter.
Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor is currently spending a lot of time in his other band, Stone Sour, but Clown says that hasn’t stopped Slipknot from collaborating.
“We’re writing as a band, and with Corey as well,” Clown says.
“Yes, we’re off, and we’re off for a while — for a long while. Okay, much needed. We’d been touring for three years. Corey’s doing what he does, which is Stone Sour, which is awesome… And we’re writing. We’re beginning to write some music for Slipknot for the new record. He’s aware of it… So while we’re writing, he’s getting songs.”
Clown says he and his bandmates “just feel like writing” right now.
“We’ve had so much fun writing The Gray Chapter, and people that started writing together during this album cycle never wrote together in fifteen years, so things are a little bit different and it’s amazing and it’s fun, and we have a good time,” he says.
“We can just go to each other’s houses and write, you know what I mean? Does that mean we’re in the studio? Why would we go in the studio and just spend a bunch of money right now? No. We’re writing, though. We’re writing for the new record, and Corey gets songs. We have a lot of stuff already that we wrote out on the road for the last three years. We have songs that we’ve written that are amazing.”
Slipknot have previously suggested that their next album might be a double concept album, but there’s still no word if they’ve decided to go down that route.
Slipknot toured Australia late last year, but Clown was forced to pull out of the tour following the death of his father-in-law.
The band completed the tour without Clown, and are now “pretty positive” that they’ll end up bringing their Knotfest festival to Australia one day.
