Stephen Merchant – Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning lanky-goggle-eyed-freak and co-creator of The Office and Extras – will be visiting Australia for his first ever stand-up comedy tour, titled Stephen Merchant Live: Hello Ladies!.
Best known for his acclaimed collaborative work with partner Ricky Gervais, Merchant has at last decided to take his considerable stand-up talents on the road. His recent UK tour was hugely successful, including ten nights at London’s Hammersmith Apollo, garnering universal critical acclaim.
It’s not widely known that he started his career as a stand-up comedian and radio presenter at XFM, where he met Gervais. He’s also previously hosted a light-hearted music show on BBC 6 Music, showing off his love of good tunes as well as his comedic genius.
Merchant, along with Gervais and Karl Pilkington, features in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most downloaded Internet show of all time, clocking up a staggering 280,000,000 downloads. Their conversations have subsequently been animated for HBO cartoon series The Ricky Gervais Show.
Merchant has also tried his hand at film acting, with roles including: Hall Pass with Owen Wilson, Tooth Fairy with Dwayne Johnson and cameos in Hot Fuzz and Run Fat Boy Run alongside Simon Pegg. He directed his first feature film Cemetery Junction with Gervais, which was released in 2010.
