Sydney Festival Linked To Measles Outbreak

At least 14 people have confirmed cases of measles after attending the World Supremacy Battlegrounds hip hop festival in Sydney last month, with the majority of cases New Zealanders who crossed the Tasman to attend the event.

Over 100 people from Auckland, Waikato and Lake Taupo have been assessed for the infectious disease, with 11 confirmed cases, while in New South Wales, another 3 men have been diagnosed, all attendees of the festival, which took place between December 6 and 8.

Public health authorities have issued a warning to all attendees and those who have been in contact with attendees to be on the look out for symptoms, which include a skin rash, fever and cough. Australia’s last measles outbreak in 2011 saw 500 cases and 80 hospital admissions.
