Sydney’s Purple Sneakers DJs Announce Debut 2CD Compilation

Written by John Ritchie on April 21, 2010

Sydney’s most popular and iconic indie club night, Purple Sneakers, will release its first-ever mix compilation, We Mix You Dance, this 11th June on Boundary Sounds through Inertia.

Spearheaded by Purple Sneakers DJs PhDJ, M.I.T and BenLucid, the 2CD mix will encompass the hottest in indie sounds from Vampire Weekend, The XX, Hot Chip, Phoenix, Miike Snow, Animal Collective, La Roux, Art vs. Science, Friendly Fires, Major Lazer and many more!

Born from the womb of the Sydney institution that is Purple Sneakers, PhDJ (founder Martin Novosel), M.I.T, and BenLucid mix guitar-based indie hits into dancefloor destroying tracks and prove that just because you play indie you don’t have to suck as a DJ. Their boundary-pushing dance-floor bombs mean you can expect to hear Friendly Fires mixed with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cool Kids mashed up with The Hold Steady, and Major Lazer, Surfer Blood, Delphic & Two Door Cinema Club all smashed in together. As dance music authority InTheMix puts it “those Purple Sneakers cats can really f*cking mix!”

Founded by Boundary Sounds CEO and music aficionado, Martin Novosel (PhDJ) in 2005, Purple Sneakers has enjoyed a five-year run (and counting) as Sydney’s hottest weekly indie gathering. Bolstered by DJs M.I.T (known for his tendency to don animal costumes and dive off tall stages) and BenLucid (the mash-up wiz), the night has become famed for its house party atmosphere and packed out crowds.

Run in Sydney’s inner-city, the Purple Sneakers brand has become such an institution that regulars now attend from as far as NSW’s Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, and Wollongong. In 2009, one party-goer was so impressed that he got the club’s stamp tattooed on his wrist (he now gets lifetime entry). A successful sister-night has since been launched in Canberra, and plans are underway to launch a Melbourne night later this year!

Further branching out of Sydney, the Purple Sneakers DJs garnered massive attention on the 2009 Parklife tour, by engineering the world’s first “decktar”; where a live CDJ was built onto the neck of a guitar, allowing the PSDJs to wield their axe while dropping tracks at the same time. On top of this, they have played festivals including Big Day Out, Splendour In the Grass, Falls Festival, Playground Weekender, and Good Vibrations, as well as supported acts including Grizzly Bear, La Roux, Santigold, Bloc Party, The Presets, and The Rapture!

With an inventive, genre-mashing sound, the Purple Sneakers DJs’ ‘We Mix You Dance’ is like no mix this country has ever seen. Blending established indie hits with the world’s most buzzing up-and-coming artists, it will galvanise dancefloors and soundtrack wild times from coast to coast!

We Mix You Dance will be out 11th June on Boundary Sounds through Inertia.
