Thelma Plum Announces July 2014 Tour Dates

Brisbane singer-songwriter Thelma Plum has announced an east-coast tour off the back of her brand-new single How Much Does Your Love Cost?, the first taste of her forthcoming EP Monster.

Plum’s debut EP Rosie focused heavily on her talents with an acoustic guitar but Monster will take on a brave new direction, and after selling out a number of shows in 2013 she promises to have a full band in the van as she makes her way through Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in July.

The EP, which was created with help from hip-hop producer M-Phazes, has a more contemporary sound. How Much Does Your Love Cost? immediately scans as a riff on spaghetti-western soundtracks before Plum’s voice builds above a crescendo of strings.

Discussing the track with triple j, Plum has revealed why she wanted to work with M-Phazes on her new material.

“I had this idea that it would be cool to put my folk side of things, with this guy that makes incredible noises that are not just hip hop noises, but just these great sounds and put them together and we’re going to come up with something that I think’s pretty interesting,” she said.

“I don’t think he’s worked with many folk artists… and I had the best time working with him. He’s just so clever and great,” she added. Plum also recalled that she “just stalked” M-Phazes after an Illy show in Brisbane, hoping to get him to come work with her.

“[I] went to one of Illy’s shows in Brisbane and stalked my way backstage and was like ‘You have to let me meet Phazes, You have to let me meet Phazes’, and I guess kind of just stalked Phazes until he let me work with him,” she said.

Plum also revealed that her lyrics have cleaned themselves up a bit, saying that there will be less swearing on her new EP. “On the whole EP there’s only one swear word and it’s really quiet so I don’t think you can tell,” she said. “I actually played it to my mum and dad and my dad was like ‘There’s no swearing, what’s going on?’ and I was like ‘Oh that’s nice, people know me as the swear girl’.”
