UPDATE: Triple J Teases This Year’s Hottest 100 Result With Some Juicy Stats

ORIGINAL STORY: Triple j has broken its all-time Hottest 100 voting record, despite some people’s calls to boycott the station over its decision to change the date of its annual countdown.

Voting for the 2017 Hottest 100 closed on Monday, and triple j has today revealed a 5.81 per cent increase in the number of votes cast since last year’s countdown, with 2,386,133 votes making this year’s countdown the largest on record.

Of those votes, 51 per cent have come from females, with 48 per cent from males (one per cent came from ‘Other’ and ‘No Answer’). The most common age of voters was 21-year-old, while about half of all voters were aged between 18 and 24. 80 per cent of voters were under 30.

New South Wales has dominated the voting with 29 per cent of all votes, followed by Victoria (23 per cent), Queensland (20 per cent), Western Australia (11 per cent), South Australia (eight per cent), Australian Capital Territory (three per cent), overseas votes (two per cent) and the Northern Territory (one per cent).

Some triple j listeners threatened to boycott the station and the Hottest 100 after the station moved the date of its countdown away from 26th January, which is associated with Invasion Day for Indigenous Australians.

The Hottest 100 of 2017 will take place this Saturday, 27th January, with the Hottest 200 to follow on Sunday, 28th January. Double J will also be replaying the 1997 Hottest 100 on Sunday.

This year, the Hottest 100 will also be competing with Triple M‘s controversial Ozzest 100 countdown and politician Cory Bernardi’s ‘Australian Conservatives 100’, but we’re pretty certain neither of those will garner anything close to 2.39 million votes.
