Adelaide hip-hop artist Allday has dropped by triple j to perform the INXS classic Never Tear Us Apart as part of the station’s ongoing ‘Like A Version’ covers series.
Allday, who is preparing to drop his debut album Startup Cult on Friday, 4th July, respected the heartfelt nature of the INXS track, but also added in a typically hypnotic rap verse. Supported by a four-piece band and some graceful backing vocals, Allday’s cover (below) is nothing short of pure class.
Explaining why he chose to perform Never Tear Us Apart, Allday told triple j that he recently watched the INXS tele-movie of the same name, and that his manager somewhat resembles the band’s late frontman Michael Hutchence.
“We were flying to Darwin, and we had four hours and that [INXS] special was on the plane screen, so I watched it, which was great,” Allday explained. “And then, my manager played a bit part of Michael Hutchence in a TV show last year… I’ve got like a stupidly handsome manager, he’s putting me out of business.”
Allday’s Right Now national tour hits Sydney on Saturday, 14th June, before wrapping up in Brisbane on Friday, 20th June.
