Bruce Springsteen has just released his new video for We Take Care of Our Own, the lead single from his forthcoming record Wrecking Ball.
Springsteen’s latest single can easily be taken out of context. As pointed out in this article by Forbes, the song’s chorus “Whereever this flag’s flown. We take care of our own” has the potential to become a thoughtless anthem promoting American nationalism. Springsteen has suffered this fate before when Born in the USA was misinterpreted by none other than Ronald Reagan during his presidential re-election campaign in 1984.
In an effort to stop the same mistake from happening twice, Springsteen has plastered the song’s lyrics across the screen throughout the video, to make sure everybody gets the message.
