Watch Childish Gambino Flex His Rap Muscle Freestyling Over Drake’s ‘Pound Cake’

As the world waits with bated breath for the arrival of his new album Because The Internet, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) is doing the press rounds, which recently included a stop off at Sway Calloway’s Sway In The Morning radio show where he unleashed a freestyle rap over Drake’s Pound Cake.

Sway In The Morning, on Eminem’s Shade 45 SiriusXM channel, are renowned for their ability to get the biggest rappers in the world to throw caution to the wind and adlib a verse over whichever beat they chose. Here they threw Pound Cake right at Gambeezy, which he turned into his own philosophical jam that’s both profound and deservedly boastful.

Here he jumps straight into the beat, giving himself a couple of bars to come up with a full verse then the punchlines flow hard and fast. Even when he’s making it up on the spot, Gambeezy is an endless encyclopaedia of pop culture references – or “so nerdy but the flow’s wordy”, as he puts it. Gambino even manages to squeeze in a few bars of colour commentary, leading even Sway into thinking he was done. Then BAM – he KOs the segment with yet even more hooks.

If by now you’re unfamiliar with Gambino’s raw and natural talent, you have serious issues and should stop reading and watch this video. If this is an eye-opening experience for you then you best revise – check out the recently released first single off Because The Internet, titled 3005 to start.
