Watch Iggy Pop & His Mates Nail Some David Bowie Classics At Charity Concert

Rock idol Iggy Pop has paid tribute to his late friend David Bowie by performing some of the muso’s most famous songs at a charity concert curated by composer Philip Glass.

As Pitchfork reports, Pop used his appearance at Glass’ Tibet House Benefit concert to cover Bowie’s The Jean Genie with the Patti Smith Group (sans Patti herself) and Tonight with soul singer Sharon Jones and a bunch of other mates. Catch footage of both performances, below.

Following Bowie’s death in January at the age of 69, Pop described the singer-songwriter as “the light of my life”, telling The New York Times, “He resurrected me. He was more of a benefactor than a friend in a way most people think of friendship. He went a bit out of his way to bestow some good karma on me.”

Pop and Bowie worked together in the ’70s, and even lived together in Berlin at one point. Bowie helped write and produce Pop’s solo albums The Idiot and Lust For Life, and also played keyboard during some of Pop’s live shows around that time. Pop, meanwhile, contributed backing vocals to Bowie’s album Low.

This year’s Tibet House Benefit also saw performances from Philip Glass himself, as well as the likes of FKA twigs and Basia Bulat. All proceeds from the event go to the non-profit educational institution and cultural embassy Tibet House US.
