West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar has delivered as the final musical guest on The Colbert Report, using the platform to stage the world premiere of a new untitled track from his upcoming, yet still untitled follow-up album to 2012’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.
For the performance of the new song, Lamar was joined by bassist Thundercat and saxophonist Terrance Martin. According to Pitchfork, the track was produced by French producer Astronote.
In a pre-performance interview, host Stephen Colbert confirmed that Lamar was in fact the final ever musical guest for The Colbert Report, which ends this week, saying that while there’s no pressure he should remember that “Paul McCartney, R.E.M., Jack White, and Nas were your opening acts.”
Colbert also referred to the fact that Snoop Dogg has named Lamar “the leader of West Coast rap” and asked, “With that job title is it hard to get life insurance?” Watch the interview and the performance below.
Lamar recently revealed another single, i, from the forthcoming album along with a video which takes viewers on a journey through Lamar’s neighbourhood of Compton, California.
