WATCH: Pantera’s Phil Anselmo Turns AC/DC Lyrics Into Creepy Poetry

This footage could almost be a public service announcement to all those interested in pursuing a career in rock ‘n’ roll. Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo has used his deep, heavy metal toned voice to portray a previously unseen, much darker side of the AC/DC classic It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N Roll) that will most likely change how you view the song forever.

When taken out of context of the happy, cheery and bright 1970s, It’s A Long Way To The Top becomes really ominous and foreboding song. Why on earth would anyone who listened to this back in the day be inspired to be a famous musician? Lugging heavy gear everywhere, punch-ons with your bandmates, breaking bones and being paid very, very poorly for the trouble are all things discussed in the lyrics that Anselmo narrates to a slow-motion montage of general band-related clusterfucks.

2013 is a much darker and scarier time. Perhaps we take things more literally now than we used to, what with the sideburns and bell bottom pants everyone wore back then. People just assumed everything was always gonna be a great time and, hey, maybe with the ultimate riffage of Angus Younggettin’ old, gettin’ gray / gettin’ ripped off, underpaid / gettin’ sold, second-hand” actually sounded pretty positive, but thanks to Anselmo I think that dream is long gone now.

The clip comes on behalf of German magazine Visions who have started the new project Rock ‘n’ Roll Manifesto, which is sure to crush a lot of aspiring musicians’ hopes and dreams. But remember – there are plenty of other glamourous roles in music, such as management…or… I dunno, PR? There isn’t actually plenty.
