Strum A Note Up In The Wires: W.A.R! Example & DJ Wire – Mallorca Rocks, Spain

I was very lucky to score a couple of last minute tickets for W.A.R! (We Are Rockstars), one of the new events being held during the Mallorca Rocks music festival in the Balearic Islands. I was in Mallorca one year ago and didn’t have the opportunity to check out Mallorca Rocks as I was here too early for the event and stayed too short a time.

First let me say that I have not seen as many English outside of England gathered in one place – me and my mate were for sure the only Australians at the Mallorca Rocks Hotel for the event (but then again, it was in Magaluf, or what our cabbie called ‘Magaluf, Liverpool’). We commented that it felt like being on the set of ‘Made in Chelsea’. We exchanged some Euro for drink vouchers, and in we went.

The Mallorca Rocks Hotel is quite a sight. It’s a rectangular space of semi-luxury apartments snaking around a giant swimming pool in the middle, so punters stood around this fenced-off pool and pushed against the stage to get closer to the music. We wondered how long it might take for someone to drunkenly jump the fence and into the pool, but believe it or not it never happened!

Mallorca Rocks 2012 has already seen some big names headline: Pendulum, Kaiser Chiefs, Mark Ronson, Chase & Status and Zane Lowe. Our night, Thursday 19 July, saw Example teaming up with DJ Wire to put on one awesome show with support from Roska and Rudimental. Rudimental in particular was an ace opener and crowd warmer for Example and DJ Wire. I was told by one of the ‘Chelsea’ English girls standing next to me that Rudimental is currently number 1 in the UK dance charts and I had no doubt; they got the crowd absolutely pumped.

Example appeared on stage to piercing screams and took to the mike, leaving the rest up to DJ Wire, both delivering pretty much the whole Playing in the Shadows album. Shot Yourself in the Foot Again and Changed the Way You Kissed Me were the biggest crowd pleasers. We did brave it to get as close to the stage as possible, and when Example was belting out his last song, the crowd was absolutely heaving. DJ Wire did a sterling job on the decks, and Example definitely knows how to keep a crowd entertained. At one stage he had a bra thrown at him and he shouted to the crowd that if anyone threw over an even bigger one he would get them up on stage for the rest of the show…which again, we didn’t see. Oh well, ladies!

An awesome night at Mallorca Rocks W.A.R! 2012. Would love to come back and see some rock like the Kaiser Chiefs. The event was extremely well organised and the venue is actually great, small enough to be intimate but big enough to give you a bit of breathing space. No complaints, only that it wasn’t longer! Thank you Spain for the tunes!
