WATCH: Coldplay – ‘Midnight’

Proving that the only certainties in life are death, taxes, and a new record from Coldplay every three years, Chris Martin and company are back, today unveiling the video for a new single entitled Midnight.

The British 4-piece surprised fans not only by dropping the single via Twitter with no advance warning, but by taking a pretty different direction to their last record, 2011’s upbeat, synthy Mylo Xyloto. Midnight is an understated slow burn, featuring production by Jon Hopkins that distorts Martin’s trademark vocals to the point where they’re almost unrecognisable.

Hopkins, who’s worked with everyone from Imogen Heap to Brian Eno, has worked some real ambient electronica magic on Midnight, with the track receiving the official seal of approval from British electronic duo Disclosure, who shared the video on Facebook and posted, “WOW! Really impressed with this new Coldplay tune… Jon Hopkins, you never cease to impress!”
