Interview: Angus & Julia Stone On Reconnecting And Recording With Rick Rubin

Brother-sister power duo Angus and Julia Stone are each powerhouse musicians in their own right and, while they’re back together again, they’ve approached things a little differently for their new self-titled record, out today.

“I guess the idea for us was, if we were going to get back together, which we hadn’t planned on doing, we had to try and do it in a different way,” explains Julia. “In a way that was going to be new for us and that meant all these things. Making a record together.”

“I think in the past it had been very much like we were separate artists that just put their tracks on the same CD,” she adds. Rather than writing and recording separately this time they took a more collaborative approach, helped along by master producer and the reason for their reunion, Rick Rubin

“Rick’s just a mad, chilled dude,” says Angus. “We didn’t really talk about music until we were in the studio and even in the studio we didn’t really talk about it, we just did it,” adds Julia. “He creates a really good environment for working and everyone who works there is very good at what they do…It was good for us. I don’t think we’ve made a record with so much focus on just music.”

Angus and Julia Stone will tour Australia this September. See the full list of dates here.
