Interview: James Bay On Developing A Multi-Dimensional Sound
British musician James Bay is about as hyped as they come at the moment. This month, he’ll be awarded the 2015 Critics’ Choice Award, an award which has previously been won by Sam Smith, Jessie J and Tom Odell, who have all gone on to have immense success.
Bay is gearing up to release his debut album, Chaos And The Calm, which is helmed by the single Hold Back The River. Music Feeds sat down with singer to talk about developing his sound and his signature hat.
“I wanted to take people on a journey whilst I was introducing myself,” he says. “From something quite intimate and solo acoustic on the The Dark Of The Morning, the first EP, through a few more sounds on the Let It Go EP to something that rocks out a little more on the Hold Back The River EP. I’m not like a one dimensional thing. I can’t stick to that. I have lots of elements that I want to bring together.”
On the topic of his infamous hat, Bay says, “That was with a mind to try and have a trademark. I think that’s kind of cool. I wanted a little image… I keep it [that hat] visible and apparent with everything I do.”
James Bay will release his debut album, Chaos And The Calm at the end of March. His single, Hold Back The River currently sits within the top five of the ARIA Charts.
