Interview: Lakyn – Finding His Voice

Lakyn Heperi is a familiar name amongst watchers of the exploitative karaoke competition The Voice. The 20-year-old performer persisted until the show’s final week, and along the way gathered national attention, singing before an estimated weekly TV audience of over three million viewers.

Now with The Voice a thing of the past, Lakyn is attempting to forge his own identity behind his debut EP, Better Than That. Five tracks of inoffensive acoustic pop, Better Than That sees Lakyn step out from behind the safety of cover songs (for the most part) and offer up his songwriting skills to the masses.

As a young musician in a savvy business, Lakyn speaks on the steep learning curve that was The Voice, allowing his songwriting to evolve while he released covers, and his desire to express himself honestly via his music.
