Interview: Royal Blood – “We Really Didn’t Expect Anything From This Project”

Since unleashing their debut EP, Out of the Black, Brighton duo Royal Blood have been making serious waves the world over. The boys — bassist and vocalist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher — recently took time out from work on their highly anticipated debut album to play their first ever Australian tour dates and we managed to sit them down for a quick interview at Music Feeds Studio.

“It’s everything we didn’t expect in the best way possible,” says Mike of the band’s inaugural visit to Australia. “It’s been a good trip, we’ve actually had time to feel like we’re tourists. Most of this month has consisted of being very busy and not having a lot of time.” But despite a hectic schedule, Mike says that the pair have been well-received by Australian crowds.

“Particularly when you come this far away. You’re on a plane for a day and on the other end there’s these parties, these gigs waiting for you, that’s something that we don’t really understand yet. It’s very surreal,” he says. As for whether the band expected to be met with success so quickly, Mike says, “We really didn’t expect anything. I guess putting that first tune out, it just summed up who we were as a band. But you can never anticipate or expect anything like what’s been going on and it’s been going quick.”
