Thief – ‘Closer’ (Acoustic)
Thief, formerly known as Thief Urban, the electronic project of musician PJ Wolf, a winner of the Triple J Unearthed Top Song competition and recipient of the Foundation for Young Australians Buzz Grant. Music Feeds recently caught up with PJ, who graced us with a performance of his single Closer, replacing the track’s boom-bap beats, sparkling modular synths, and instrumental layers with a soulful piano arrangement that resembles Ryan Adams‘ at his most tender and haunting.
We also got to chat to PJ about his experience at the recent SXSW conference. “It is a very intense experience. We learn a lot, particularly about performing under duress, because you’re sort of doing gigs, you have ten minutes to set up all of your stuff, you never know what it’s going to sound like until you start singing and playing the song… so you get really good at rolling with the punches,” PJ tells us.
We also learnt that “idiots” are to blame for PJ no longer going by his Thief Urban moniker. “That’s what I started with. It was heartbreaking, I wasn’t that keen to let go,” he says. “But essentially, as it picked up steam… people get confused. I did have the occasional person in cowboy boots showing up to shows. No, it was more like the ‘urban’ thing. Some people were confused, they expected an urban act, and some people don’t understand what puns are, and then there were some people who thought I was playing in Keith Urban’s band.”
