Proving that he can still pull out a surprise when he wants to, Paul Simon has wowed fans in New York with a performance in a small venue that included a couple of duets with David Byrne of Talking Heads.
Spinner reports on the intimate little show at New York’s Webster Hall, which has a capacity of a relatively paltry 1,500. During the second encore, Byrne emerged from backstage to join Simon on renditions of Talking Heads’ Road To Nowhere as well as Simon’s Graceland classic, You Can Call Me Al, with the two of them taking turns on lead vocals. Elsewhere in the show, Simon performed songs from his latest album So Beautiful Or So What, released in April, such as its title track and Rewrite. He also managed such older songs as 5o Ways To Leave Your Lover, The Only Living Boy in New York, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, The Sound of Silence and Kodachrome. Other covers included the Beatles‘ Here Comes The Sun, Jimmy Cliff’s Vietnam and Little Junior‘s Mystery Train.
Simon will head to Europe later this month to play festivals including Glastonbury and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
