As Kanye West gears up for the – possible – release of his new studio album this Friday, he has at least got an old lawsuit with music publisher EMI out the way, as it’s being reported that it has been settled.
According to The Blast, via Consequence Of Sound, both Kanye West and EMI have told the court that they had reached a deal, thus ending the lawsuits they had filed against each other.
In January, West filed a lawsuit against EMI wanting freedom from his contract with him, saying it was like “servitude.” The contract, which was signed prior to West’s debut album in 2003, is pretty harsh and says that he must “remain actively involved in writing, recording and producing compositions and major label albums,” as his main occupation and that he cannot “seek to retire as a songwriter, recording artist, or producer.”
In response, EMI counter-sued West for attempting to break his contract on the basis that the contract only required West to deliver ownership interest in whatever song he writes.
As stated previously, the settlement comes right before Kanye is scheduled to drop his new album Jesus Is King, slated for release on Friday, 27th September. It will serve as the follow up to 2018’s ye.
