Watch Andrea Bocelli Sing In An Empty Cathedral In Milan, Italy

Yesterday, acclaimed Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli gave an extraordinary Easter Sunday performance at Milan’s iconic Duomo di Milan cathedral, streamed live over YouTube.

With no audience present, and the city still under a continued lockdown due to coronavirus, Bocelli – alone except for accompanying cathedral organist Emmanuele Vianelli – sung a pretty stunning selection of pieces specially arranged for solo voice and organ.

This included ‘Ave Maria’ and a particularly poignant, unaccompanied rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’. It’s both incredibly beautiful and very eerie seeing the Italian singer perform in the enormous, empty chapel, which normally has a capacity of around 40,000.

In a statement, Bocelli commented that he will “cherish the emotion of this unprecedented and profound experience.”

“Love is a gift. Making it flow is the primary purpose of life itself. And I find myself once again indebted to life. My gratitude goes to all those who made this possible, the City of Milan and the Duomo, and to all those who accepted the invitation and joined in a planetary embrace.”

Bocelli and his foundation (The Andrea Bocelli Foundation) are currently involved in an emergency COVID-19 campaign that’s fundraising to help hospitals purchase all the necessary equipment to protect their medical staff – you can donate here through GoFundMe.
