As you may have suspected following the announcement that they’re set to play Governors Ball, New York indie kings Interpol are coming back with a new record in 2014, announcing that their fifth studio effort will be with us later this year.
Although it’s yet to receive a name or concrete release date, the announcement of a follow up to the seminal outfit’s 2010 self-titled release is very good news, with rumours abound that the Paul Banks-led outfit had parted ways. But guitarist Daniel Kessler told NME that was never on the cards:
“There was never any sense that we’d come to a breaking point or anything but if you play 200 shows and tour as hard as we did, you need time to get back to other elements of life, and start thinking about new songs.”
Founding member Carlos D left the group in 2010, but Kessler says that the band still retains fresh energy:
“We’re never lacking ideas or inspiration. There’s always something new to be said, and if you don’t have something new to say, that’s when you should take a break. We got back together because we felt that some of these songs had a certain urgency. It feels new again.”
Interpol are set to take to the stage at Governors Ball in NYC on June 6-8 alongside Outkast, The Strokes, Jack White and Vampire Weekend – fingers crossed that the guys want to bring the live action back to Australia later in the year.
