Sydonia ‘Reality Kicks’ Tour Diary: Brissy-Byron

Melbourne’s powerhouse prog metal rockers Sydonia have had a whirlwind year, releasing their album, ‘Reality Kicks’, and then kicking off an extensive national tour taking on regional and city stages alike.

In the ever fleeting down time in between shows, Sydonia have kindly offered to document their on-the-road shenanigans, in both words and pictures, exclusively for Music Feeds readers in this Reality Kicks tour diary.

Brisbane

After a very relaxing week off in Noosa watching movies, eating spicy foods, drinking beer and walking the beach, we packed into the van and started the journey for the next three shows – Brisbane, Gold Coast and Byron Bay.

Much like the trip up, there were many ghost-road works where the speed limit suddenly went from 110km/h down to 60km/h…..with no road-works. It was as confusing as seeing a dolphin on dry land at the milk bar.

These next three shows were very different to any other Sydonia show. Due to unforeseen circumstances, our guitarist Sam, had to head back to Melbourne to look after his family. Sydonia as a three piece, we discussed how this was going to work on the way down.

The solution, Dana plugging in playing stereo (two cabs) and Dan from Red Bee jumping up for a song or two. Dan played Rubber Bullet with us for these three shows, it was rad, he did an impromptu Red Bee-esque guitar solo which made everyone grin.

We played the Crowbar in Brisbane, which is a neat little venue in Fortitude Valley. We played there last tour too. After a big Sydonia family dinner at a local Thai restaurant we headed to the venue to prepare. The crowd was receptive to the Sydonia three piece!

Pricey, our manager, also joined us on stage for Bateria. When he’s not being a legendary manager, he’s being a legendary dude – it was rad hanging out with him at the gig. That night we stayed at our mate Jeff Husoy’s house, thanks mate, you also put on a ripper brekky for us the following morning.

Gold Coast and Byron Bay

Coolangatta and Byron Bay were next up. It was rad playing to our appreciative Goldy fans, some of which hadn’t seen us for ages. Thank you Crystal Gale for putting us up too! We were all starting to feel the effects of ‘Toyota Commuter 3.0D 12 Seater Automatic 12-Seater’ cabin fever, but we powered on to Byron Bay.

We arrived early afternoon which gave us lots of time to soak up the Byron atmosphere and drink their delicious Stone and Wood Pacific Ale at the venue. Byron is a beautiful place and it was a great spot to finish the east-coast leg of the Reality Kicks album tour.

After the Byron show, all bands hung out upstairs at the provided accommodation. We hadn’t really had a proper opportunity to hang like this all tour, so it was a good time to finally do it and reminisce about the tour.

Thank you to all those that came out and saw us and pledged to the Pozible campaign, we greatly appreciate all of your support!
