Splendour In The Grass 2015 – Day 1

There are a handful of emotional stages festival goers have inevitably and collectively been through in the last few days. It began on Wednesday when you scurried out of the work place politely reminding your colleagues you wouldn’t be back for the rest of the week. “Why’s that?” they ask, and you need only utter the one word… “Splendour.”

The height of your smugness reached its peak perhaps on Thursday, when, after hearing your mates back home bang on about how horrific the weather was going to be, you arrived in Byron to a glorious blue sky. You’ve nailed this, you were thinking.

You may have even sent a few cocky snapchats of your Friday morning pre-game, of sensational festival outfits, perfect make up and your first drink of the day. Nailed. It.

Then, as the clouds rolled in you had your first moment of doubt. Non-splendour goers at home prepared to be proven right. “I should have gone” swiftly turned into “nah mate I’m glad I didn’t go” as the heavens opened, bringing in the rains and the side-splitting Splendour In The Mud puns.

There was a point in the day, perhaps when the mud outweighed the beer, when you questioned if you’d made the right choice. Knee deep in stinky dirt and soaked to the bone you might have thought, just for a second, that you may have fucked up here.

Until the bombastic sounds of Ecca Vandal filled the amphitheatre. Until you heard the gritty, delightful set from Urban Cone at Mix Up. Until you were there when San Cisco killed it, spreading the love so far and wide any regret was a thing of the past.

Did we care about the weather when we grooved along relentlessly with Tkay Maidza? Or said a last goodbye to #1 Dads, the adoring send off fitting for an act gone too soon.

Did we care about the weather when we made the right call, missing the start of Of Monsters And Men to witness Porter Robinson deliver the game changing set of his career?

And did we care about the weather when Mark Ronson and co had the entire hill singing along to Amy Winehouse’s Valerie, or jiving as one to Uptown Funk?

Nooooope. Rise up Splendour lovers, we get to play in the mud again today.
