The Netherlands has taken out this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, Israel after a tense finish.
Duncan Laurence took out the contest with the song ‘Arcade’, beating Italy for second place, while Russia, Switzerland, and Norway took out third, fourth and fifth spots respectively. Laurence described the song as being inspired by the story of someone he loved deeply, who died at a young age.
Australia’s Kate Miller-Heidke managed a very respectable 9th place, but not quite managing to equal (or bettering) our best ranking to date of second place with Dami Im’s performance of ‘Sound of Silence’ in 2016.
Miller-Heidke wowed the audience with her gravity-defying performance of her aptly titled Eurovision song ‘Zero Gravity’ and impressed both the professional juries and the TV audience.
The Brisbane singer-songwriter was chosen to represent Australia at this year’s sequin-studded international songwriting comp after our first ever public vote and was touted as a possible favourite to win the event.
