Artist’s Robot Turns Tattoo Into Musical Score

Moscow-based media artist Dmitry Morozov, who goes by the moniker ::vtol:: and whose previous works include a glow-in-the-dark model of a cell colony, has created a robotic instrument that reads tattoos as if they were musical notation as part of his latest project, titled Reading My Body.

According to The Creators Project, Morozov’s device consists of an Arduino Nano circuit board, hand controllers, and a metal railing to support mounted shifting black line sensors. The sensors then move up and down Morozov’s barcode-like tattoo, using a stepper motor to emit sound.

The device also features manual sensor control and a Nintendo Wii controller that uses an Open Sound Control mechanism to add more sounds when moved by the hand, while Morozov’s tattoo is designed to contain “the maximum number of variable time slots between [sensor] triggers.”
