‘The Bean Counter’s 100’ Is Tracking Your Hottest 100 Votes: Here’s Who’s Winning

UPDATE: Here’s Who Experts Predict Will Win Triple J’s Hottest 100 Of 2017

ORIGINAL STORY: Hottest 100 prediction guide The Bean Counter’s 100 is back for another year, and it’s tracking your votes to help predict which songs will top triple j‘s annual countdown.

Run by 39-year-old Brisbane accountant Tim Wilshire, The Bean Counter’s 100 has already counted 15,000 votes since voting opened for the 2017 Hottest 100 earlier this month, and it’s just released its list of the top 200 vote-getters so far.

Unsurprisingly, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘HUMBLE.’ is way out in front, and Wilshire says it “should” end up topping this year’s countdown.

Methyl Ethel’s ‘Ubu’, Lorde’s ‘Green Light’ and Gang Of Youths’ ‘The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows’ are battling it out for second spot right now, while Gang Of Youths look like they could end up with three songs in the top 10.

Brockhampton, Thundamentals, Angus & Julia Stone and The Smith Street Band also currently have songs in the top 10 as well. View the top 20 vote-getters so far, below.

Wilshire successfully predicted the top 22 songs in last year’s Hottest 100 (just in a different order), after counting well over 50,000 votes.

Wilshire’s system works by tallying votes from Instagram posts which include specific hashtags — #hottest100, #triplej or #hottest1002017 — but images including multiple votes for the same song are disregarded.

“We aren’t a computer scientist, but we have a tried and tested method of manually entering the data into a big spreadsheet,” he tells Music Feeds.

“We find that the OCR [Optical Character Recognition] technology out there used by others is great, but we have noticed their can be anomalies that can trip up the system.”

Wilshire isn’t the only person trying to predict the Hottest 100 this year, though; Nick Whyte’s ‘100 Warm Tunas’ project is back, and it recently released its first round of predictions too.
