Bruce Springsteen Covers AC/DC In Perth

Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band have been known to throw out multiple covers during live shows (you have to do something to fill up to three hours), but during a recent stop in Perth, the band lent their chops to an Australian hard rock classic: Highway to Hell by AC/DC.

Concertgoers in the Perth Arena last night let out huge cheers when the instantly recognisable opening chords of AC/DC’s infernal classic rung out. The cover, a tribute to original AC/DC singer, the late Bon Scott, who grew up near Perth in Fremantle, kicked off a 28-song set from The Boss.

During their 40-year career, Springsteen and his famous band have covered everyone from Woody Guthrie and Chuck Berry to Patti Smith and The Clash, though the recent foray into hard rock is part of a new predilection for Aussie artists, covering The Saints on new album High Hopes.

Hard rock veteran Tom Morello, a recent addition to Springsteen’s band, celebrated their opening number on Twitter, writing, “Thanks Perth for 3 amazing nights! Opened show tonite [sic] in Bon Scott’s hometown with muthaflippin’ “HIGHWAY TO HELL”. The AC/DC Street Band?!”

The band followed up the hard-rocking cover with a Darkness on the Edge of Town trifecta of Badlands, Adam Raised a Cain, and Candy’s Room. The entire concert will soon be available for download via the official Bruce Spingsteen website, a new initiative introduced by The Boss.
