Childish Gambino Streams Smooth New R&B Jam ‘Sober’

Childish Gambino has shared a new R&B-style track titled Sober, the first cut to officially be taken from the rapper’s forthcoming mixtape, STN MTN / KAUAI. The track features an ’80s-style pop beat reminiscent of Frank Ocean, while Gambino’s vocals channel The Weeknd and even Michael Jackson.

The multi-talented rapper, actor, and stand-up comedian, whose real name is Donald Glover, announced that he would release a new mixtape via DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz imprint late last month. The mixtape’s title is a tribute to Glover’s childhood home in Stone Mountain, Georgia and Hawaii’s Kauai island.

According to one of Glover’s recent tweets, Sober has been taken from the KAUAI side of the two-sided release. The mixtape’s artwork indicates that the KAUAI side will feature actor Jaden Smith playing The Boy, a character that was introduced in Glover’s 2013 short film, Clapping For The Wrong Reasons.

Last month, Glover shared a previously unheard track titled Candler Road. However, it’s not clear if the song was taken from the upcoming mixtape. While Sober was shared with the STN MTN / KAUAI artwork, Candler Road‘s SoundCloud widget featured the artwork of Glover’s acclaimed 2013 sophomore album, Because the Internet, which indicates that it could simply be a track that didn’t make the final album.
