Donald Glover Explains Why He’s Bringing Childish Gambino To An End

Childish Gambino, the hip hop alter-ego of celebrated slashie Donald Glover, will cease to exist following his next album.

The ‘Sober’ songsmith recently teased that his forthcoming fourth studio LP will be his last, making us all clutch OUR EMOTIONS…

…and now the rapper has shed a bit of light on the reasons why he’s putting Childish Gambino out to pasture, saying that he reckons making more tunes under the monicker would be unnecessary and un-punk.

“There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’” he tells HuffPost. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.

“Like I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk,” he continues. “Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at [his original FX series] Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore.

“As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

Still, even though the world might be saying goodbye to Gambino in the near future, you can bet your Redbone that you’ll still be seeing Glover around the traps.

As well as working on season two of Atlanta, he’s also set to play Simba in Disney’s upcoming remake of The Lion King, and Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars spinoff. He’s also working on a new animated Deadpool series.
