Flight Facilities are set to continue their winning collaboration streak with the news that they have teamed up with members from fellow Australian outfits The Preatures and Jagwar Ma in the studio this week.
One half of Flight Facilities, Jimmy Lyell, confirmed to triple j the recording session went down in Sydney this week. “We’ve been wanting to do [a track] with a bunch of people for a long time,” explained Lyell. “So I called Jono Ma from Jagwar Ma in the morning, ’cause he is the synth overlord. He is a mad professor in the studio, he needs a cape or something – he’s amazing.”
Soon they were joined by Lyell’s bandmate Hugo Gruzman, the other half of Jagwar Ma, Gabriel Winterfield, as well as The Preatures’ Isabella Manfredi and Jack Moffit – together forming one hell of an Australian supergroup. Evidence of the collab can be seen in an Instagram post, below, by Isabella Manfredi who described the studio session as “a *kinky* high school reunion.”
According to Lyell, they all began brainstorming what would be the “closest thing” to all their styles combined, coming up with exciting references like Primal Scream, The Temptations, Donna Summer and Grace Jones.
“I’m really interested to see what will come of it,” he said. Lyell adds they’ll be heading back into the studio in the coming week to finish off the collaboration, which if all goes well will be released soon as a standalone single.
“Because with this many people involved – and we’ve all just released a record – it’ll be great just to throw it out as a standalone and do things like join each other on stage,” he said. “I’m just completely talking out of my ass here; I hope everyone else is feeling the same way – but it’d be really, really cool if that kind of stuff happened.”
“Hugo and I are all about that. We’re big collaborators and we always want to surprise fans and crowds and bring people on. So we hope that eventuates.” In fact, Flight Facilities did such very recently when they joined up with Vic Mensa at the Sydney leg of Laneway Festival, and masterfully mashed up their tracks, Down To Earth and Mensa’s Down On My Luck.
“That was epic and hopefully we can do that for the next couple [Laneways] too,” Lyell told triple j.
