The Foo Fighters have agreed to play a homecoming show in Richmond, Virginia that was organised by fans without the band’s knowledge. Following a months-long crowdfunding campaign, the band tweeted to confirm their appearance, writing, “See ya soon… let’s have a good time.”
Freelance creative director and copywriter Andrew Goldin launched the campaign on the crowfunding site Crowdhoster back in March. Goldin and fellow organisers Brig White, John McAdorey and Lucas Krost sought to bring the Foos back for their first Richmond show since 1998.
The four set themselves the goal of selling 1,400 tickets at $50 each to the unscheduled concert in order to convince the band to return to the town where frontman Dave Grohl grew up. Donors’ cards would only be charged if the show sold out and would be refunded if the band didn’t agree to play.
At the time of publication, the campaign, which is now hosted on a Crowdtilt Open site, has raised $70,026, surpassing its goal of $70,000. Two local Richmond businesses, Brown’s Volkswagon and Sugar Shack Donuts, have each donated $5,000 to the cause and plan to give away their tickets.
“We’re just a few friends and fans looking to make this happen,” Goldin told SPIN back in April. The venue and date for the show are yet to be determined, but in their campaign video organisers hoped the show will take place “somewhere in Richmond at some point in 2014.” It now remains to be seen if the campaign’s success proves a can of worms as fans of others bands launch their own.
