The eighth Foo Fighters album is “almost halfway done” according to producer Butch Vig. The veteran rock producer said that the group is using the opportunity of the new record to experiment with a variety of recording techniques, comparing the album to the band’s 2011 effort Wasting Light.
“We’ve been recording at some different locations, but we’re almost halfway done with the recording and it’s going well,” Vig, a longtime Foos collaborator, told Kerrang, via NME. “It sounds different — we’ve thrown a few things into the mix, in the recording process, that are going to give the record a different sound and a different feel. It’s been a challenge, but it’s also been exciting.”
Vig’s comments seem to confirm speculation the band had been recording their eighth full-length effort in several different studios. Back in February, unconfirmed reports suggested the band was recording the album in “12 different studios, across 12 different cities” with Vig and Steve Albini.
Frontman Dave Grohl has told Rolling Stone the new LP is “badass. We’re doing something that nobody knows about, it’s f-cking rad. We begin recording soon, but we’re doing it in a way that no one’s done before and we’re writing the album in a way that I don’t think has been done before.”
A post to the band’s official Instagram page in January indicated that the album’s masters have been completed. Fuelling speculation as to the album’s sound, Grohl previously told Radio 1’s Zane Lowe (via Gigwise) “the entire concept is really going to take people by surprise and it sounds nuts.”
