Korn Guitarist: “None Of Us Are Any Different Than Tim Lambesis”

Korn guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch has penned a defence of disgraced As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis, who was recently sentenced to six years over a murder-for-hire plot. Writing in his regular column for Loudwire, Welch drew multiple parallels between himself and the AILD singer.

Welch opens his column by recounting a time in 2000 when he was sharing cocaine with a member of his band’s road crew who was formerly a high-ranking member of a street gang. At the time, the guitarist was going through an acrimonious divorce and heavily abusing cocaine and alcohol.

Welch explains that he asked the roadie, “What would it take to have my wife and her new boyfriend hurt really bad… or worse?” He writes that he is “so thankful for what came out of that dude’s mouth. As he stared into my eyes… he said, ‘Head, if you cross that line, you can never go back.'”

“I am so thankful that he didn’t pour gasoline on the fire of hate that was burning in me. What if he was selfish and tried to get a butt-load of money out of me and encouraged me to go through with it? What if he encouraged me to murder like the Tim Lambesis situation?,” the guitarist continues.

Welch then elaborates on his sympathy for Lambesis and his situation, writing, “I’m not much different than Tim. I don’t think any of us are. We are all capable of bad choices under the weight of heavy circumstances. Some can snap in one way and others can snap in other ways… but EVERYONE has a certain breaking point — especially if there’s other substances involved.”

Welch’s column comes in contrast to a statement recently issued by AILD guitarist Nick Hipa, who rubbished Lambesis’ explanation that his judgement was clouded by drugs as an “excuse” that did not hold up in court, and labelling him a “sociopathic narcissist in definite need of rehabilitation.”
