Kurt Cobain Conspiracy Theorist Suing Seattle Police

Seattle resident and self-described investigative reporter Richard Lee is suing the Seattle Police Department over previously unseen photos from Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain‘s death scene that were unveiled last month. Lee claims they should have been released nearer to Cobain’s death.

As Seattle P-I writes, the 50-year-old Lee has developed a reputation as a conspiracy theorist for his repeated, “groundless” claims that Cobain’s death was a homicide. In addition to hosting the public access show Kurt Cobain Was Murdered, he has made attempted runs for mayor of Seattle.

In his suit, for which he is representing himself, Lee claims the Seattle PD should have released the recently unveiled photos shortly after Cobain’s 5th April 1994 death, and according to Seattle P-I, he may have a legitimate case. According to Washington state law, government agencies that fail to disclose releasable records must pay between $5 and $100 per day, per document for the delay.

Lee claims that he was not given copies of the photos even following their public release. In his suit, he explains that he has dealt with the SPD “many times in the past,” calling them “characteristically uncooperative, dilatory, and non-compliant with his requests for records and information.”

The photos at the centre of the case, which viewers can see below, were part of the department’s reexamination of the Cobain case in anticipation of the 20th anniversary of his death. Police stressed that the case had not been “re-opened” and that the images contained “nothing earth-shattering.”
