Lorde Has Penned A Weird, Wonderful And Deeply Personal Tribute To Her Hero, David Bowie

The death of David Bowie has seen an outpouring of love and grief on a scale that seems absolutely unprecedented in our lifetime.

Within the music world, everyone from Sir Paul McCartney to Marilyn Manson to Kanye West to Moby has offered up heartfelt eulogies to the Starman, citing him as one of their greatest influences.

Beyond music, everyone from fashion moguls to politicians to astronauts have felt the impact of his loss.

Right across the world, thousands of fans have gathered in droves to honour the legendary singer’s life and legacy.

Through his edgy and ever-evolving craft, David Bowie transcended the boundaries of genre, gender and culture itself to become one of the most influential artists of our time.

And as further proof that the White Duke continued to inspire new generations of performers, right up until his death, 19-year-old Kiwi songstress Lorde has just shared a deeply personal story about how meeting David Bowie changed her life forever.

In an emotional and eloquent Facebook post, the young singer – who, like the enigmatic Ziggy Stardust, knows a thing or two about doing things against the grain – recalled the time she first met her hero at a benefit event in honour of actress Tilda Swinton.

“I’ve never met a hero of mine and liked it. It just sucks, the pressure is too huge, you can’t enjoy it. David was different,” Lorde writes. “I’ll never forget the caressing of our hands as we spoke, or the light in his eyes. That night something changed in me – I felt a calmness grow, a sureness.

“I think in those brief moments, he heralded me into my next new life, an old rock and roll alien angel in a perfect grey suit,” she continued. I realized everything I’d ever done, or would do from then on, would be done like maybe he was watching. I realized I was proud of my spiky strangeness because he had been proud of his.”

David Bowie’s music has undoubtedly inspired millions, but the artist himself has always had a particular kinship with those who identify as freaks, weirdos, and outsiders.

And because of the decade-spanning magnitude of his influence, there can be note doubt that – even in death – David Bowie will continue to inspire generations to come.

As Lorde sums up: “He was a piece of bright pleated silk we could stretch out or fold up small inside ourselves when we needed to… It’s not going to change, how we feel about him. For the rest of our lives, we’ll always be crashing in that same car.

Thankyou, David Bowie.”
