Mac Demarco Has Finally Addressed The Controversy With Him & Mitski

Mac Demarco is gearing up for the release of his new album Here Comes The Cowboy, and in a recent interview with Huck magazine has finally given us his thoughts of one of the big controversies surrounding the upcoming release.

Back when Demarco announced the new album and released lead single ‘Nobody’, fans were immediate to note that just last year Mitski released an album called Be The Cowboy with a lead single also called ‘Nobody’.

Mitski thought the whole thing was a bit of a non-issue, saying that she didn’t think the similarities were intentional.

“I’m 100% sure mac & I just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious!” she said. “What’s wild is we have the same PR, so I LOVE my personal conspiracy theory that she heard the album+track titles but kept quiet thinking maybe some Mac fans will mistakenly find me loll.”

Mac echoed Mitski’s thoughts, saying that the assumption that he’d copied her was ridiculous and that he didn’t even know who Mitski was.

“I didn’t know that one of her singles was ‘Nobody’ till two days ago,” he said.

“My manager told me and I thought, “Whoa, weird.” Even if I had known, I don’t think I would’ve changed it. I didn’t think people were gonna run with it that far. It’s ridiculous. It’s just music. Mitski’s song and my song sound eons different. Most of the people talking about it didn’t even listen to my song. With music today, a lot of it isn’t about music.”

However, to make light of the whole situation, Demarco said he might cover some of Mitski’s music on today.

“It’s really cool,” Demarco said of Mitski’s Be The Cowboy, “and I think we might even cover one of the songs because it would be fun and we could try to make sense of the situation.”
