New Bloc Party EP Expected Mid-2013

Bloc Party is currently working on a new EP that the band hopes to release by mid 2013 in what would be a quick follow-up to last year’s record Four, which was only released around 7 months ago.

Speaking with Music Feeds at Future Music 2013 in Sydney, Bloc Party’s lead guitarist Russell Lissack gave a progress report on how the new EP is coming along:

“We’ve written quite a few songs. We’ve kind of been seizing opportunities in soundchecks to write some songs and we’ve recorded two, so far… If we can squeeze in a bit more time between the next two tours we’re going to hopefully record a few more songs and put something out [around] northern hemisphere summer.”

Talking on how the new material is shaping up, Lissack is hesitant to go into specifics but says the songs are not only a departure from 2012 album Four, but sound like nothing else Bloc Party has previously released:

“The two songs we’ve recorded so far, I think, they’re pretty different to anything we’ve done before. It’s not like a continuation of the record we’ve just made, it’s a completely separate thing. It’s the next step; the next progression.

“I’m hesitant to describe something before we put it out because [it creates an expectation] and I always prefer people to judge it on hearing it.”

Relatively speaking it wasn’t all that long ago the future of Bloc Party seemed in doubt; now the band look likely to release and LP and EP within 12 months. When asked about the surprisingly quick turn around Lissack explained it is a natural outcome of the band’s personality:

“We’ve always been very creative people. We wrote that record [Four] a year ago now so once you start touring for a while you’re playing new songs to people and getting [with] grips to that. Then after a while the creative bug strikes again and you’re itching to do [new] stuff.

“I know Kele [Okereke, frontman] really enjoys writing while we’re on the road. I think it’s one of the things that keeps him sane.”
