New Music: St Vincent, Bombay Bicycle Club, Chromeo ft. Toro Y Moi

‘Synth’ is the word for today’s New Music, with three out of four tracks coming from some of the most singular and forward-thinking keyboard-manipulators in the game today: St Vincent, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Chromeo, who got his experimental brother-in-arms, Toro Y Moi, to tag along.

Naturally, each artist puts the synth to work in an entirely different way. While St Vincent uses it to compliment her crunchy, percussive, ear-worm beats, BBC employ it as an atmospheric soundbed for their lush indie rock stylings, meanwhile Chromeo and friend get to channeling Bernie Worrell.

We even do a quick U-turn to pay some mind to our metalcore-loving pals, with today’s list bookended by the latest single from Gold Coast-bred outfit Prepared Like A Bride, still hot off an appearance as the local act at the Coffs Harbour leg of Vans Warped Tour Australia 2013.

St Vincent – Digital Witness

In which Oklahoman Annie Clark, known to many as the bewitching St Vincent, takes Generation Me to task for their Instagram-centred design for life, singing, “If I can’t show it / If you can’t see me / What’s the point of doing anything?” It serves as another peek of her upcoming LP, Birth In Reverse.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Luna

This prolific indie four-piece hail from London and are currently gearing up for the release of their fourth studio album, So Long, See You Tomorrow, with vocalist Jack Steadman describing the new record as “a balance between making it interesting and intelligent, but also not highbrow or elitist.”

Chromeo ft. Toro Y Moi – Come Alive

While reminiscent of Don’t Turn The Lights On in its sultriness, Come Alive sounds as though it fell out of Rick James‘ back pocket after finishing a session with Quincy Jones and Bernie Worrell. Through some rip in the space-time continuum, Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi) was there too.

Prepared Like A Bride – Overcomer

To conclude today’s list, we make a swift, neck-breaking 180 in order to face this epic yet crushing number from Christian metalcore outfit Prepared Like A Bride, who kicked off the year by releasing the title track from their upcoming album of the same name, which is due out in February.
