The highly anticipated reunion of left-of-field Atlanta hip-hop legends Outkast finally kicked off at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California over the weekend, with a 90-minute set that included some of the band’s most enduring anthems like ATLiens, B.O.B, Roses, and Hey Ya.
“I know it’s kind of weird, 20 years later n’ shit,” André 3000, one half of the boundary-pushing Southern duo told the crowd at the end of the set, “But thank y’all for coming.” The first weekend of Coachella 2014 was the first time that he and partner Big Boi had shared a stage in eight years.
The duo opened their set with B.O.B from their universally acclaimed 2000 album Stankonia, before working through a career-spanning set made up mostly of album cuts, in addition to separate mini-sets from each member. The set also featured appearances from Janelle Monáe and Future.
As is expected with festivals, their performance was not without its problems. In a neutral review by Complex, the outlet reports that technical problems forced the pair to cut Ms. Jackson, one of their biggest mainstream hits, halfway through, and that the band’s focus on album cuts and the solo sets came at the expense of more popular tracks. The two also reportedly ran over their set time.
The band announced their festivals-only reunion tour last year, however there has so far been no news of any scheduled appearances for Australia. Many fans are speculating that they will headline the 2014 instalment of Splendour In The Grass. The event’s final lineup is still forthcoming.
