A Punter’s Guide To Betting On This Year’s Triple J Hottest 100

Australia Day. That special time of the year when temporary southern cross tattoos become (kinda) socially acceptable, hundreds of sunscreen-dicks are fried into backs across the nation, and your loosest mate probably builds a wizard staff out of all the tinnies he’s necked and then passes out before triple j has a chance to reveal the number 1 song on their Hottest 100.

And the only thing more Straya’n than all of that? Having a bloody punt, cobber.

In case you didn’t already know, it’s actually legal to bet on the outcome of the Hottest 100. And if you wanna try your luck, we’ve got the lowdown of all of the odds as they currently stand.

Kendrick Lamar‘s King Kunta is firming as favourite to take out the big countdown, with Oddschecker conceding that the song is “riddled with obscenities so may not be as popular with all audiences”, but it’s still “come in from $14 when the market was first priced up in June to as short as $1.75”.

While Major Lazer’s Lean On feat. DJ Snake & MØ has been “one of the main players in the market since the reveal”, paying $5 at the start of July and starting the new year at $2.40. Right now, the chart-topper is paying $3.50 but those odds are apparently “expected to shorten as the deadline gets closer”.

The only other song currently priced in single figures is The RubensHoops which is making “a late burst for the triple j crown”. Odds on the Menangle band’s song taking out the countdown have “shortened considerably in 2016” with William Hill’s recent price as short as $5, although Sportsbet are still offering a bit more value at $9.

Oddschecker reckons that the chances of last year’s winner Chet Faker making it back-to-back wins are pretty slim, but nonetheless his Marcus Marr collab The Trouble With Us has been priced up at $17 to take out the top spot this year.

According to the betting site, the top 10 in this year’s Hottest 100 is most likely to be rounded out by The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face, Tame Impala’s Let It Happen and The Less I Know The Better, Jarryd James’ Do You Remember, Drake’s Hotline Bling and Violent Soho’s Like Soda.

And if you’re curious following the whole #Bieber4Hottest100 pan-flash (which was actually started by betting company William Hill), The Biebs’ hit Where Are U Now with Jack U is paying $81 bob for the win.

Finally, Oddschecker have given some hot tips on a couple of dark horses which are “worth watching out for” after “generating some interest on site and on social media channels”, including Magnolia by Gang of Youths ($34) and Dead Fox by Courtney Barnett ($61).
