RIP Queensland’s 2020 Schoolies. Coronavirus has taken a lot from us this year. It started with the festivals, then the footy, then it eliminated pointless trips to shopping centres, and now it’s come for Schoolies.
2020 has probably been the worst year to ever be a Grade 12 student. And now? It’s had an appropriate rounding off, with Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk calling it off.
It comes as three new COVID-19 cases popped up in the state overnight, two of which were in the Schoolies go-to, the Gold Coast.
A year without a flooded Cavill Mall, without the Friday afternoon Pacific Motorway congestion, and without a bunch of 17-year-olds collectively experiencing their first bender. A sad year indeed.
“This is a mass event, it poses high risk, not only to the people that attend but the people they come in contact with,” said Palaszczuk.
“There will be unfortunately no concerts, no organised events, no mass gatherings.
“I hope parents and students can understand this event will not be going ahead in this format this year.”
